New to Indian Food?
A Beginner's Guide for Kanata & Stittsville

← Back to Blog

You've driven past an Indian restaurant a hundred times and thought about trying it. Maybe a coworker keeps raving about butter chicken. Maybe you're just curious. Whatever brought you here — this guide is for you. No jargon, no assumptions. Just honest answers to the questions first-timers always have.

First: Is Indian Food Always Spicy?

This is the #1 question we get from first-time customers. The short answer: no. The longer answer: Indian food has a wide range of spice levels, and most of the popular dishes people love — butter chicken, dal makhani, palak paneer — are naturally mild or can easily be made mild.

At Desi Tadka Express, you can tell us exactly how spicy you want your food. Mild means barely any heat — just warmth and flavour. Medium is noticeable but comfortable for most people. Hot is for those who want a real kick. We never assume you want it spicy.

Our Tip

On your first visit, order mild. You can always go spicier next time — but it's much harder to fix a dish that's too hot once it's made.

What to Order on Your First Visit

Here's a simple, beginner-friendly order that introduces you to Indian food without overwhelming you. This works great for a group of 2–4 people.

  1. 1
Samosas (starter) Crispy pastry filled with spiced potato and peas. These are mild and universally loved. A great way to open your appetite before the mains arrive.
  2. 2
Butter Chicken (main) The dish that converts most first-timers. Creamy, slightly sweet tomato sauce with tender chicken. Ask for mild. This is our most ordered dish for a reason.
  3. 3
Dal Makhani (main or side) Black lentils cooked for 8 hours with butter and cream. Rich and earthy — like a very elegant lentil soup. Naturally mild. Vegetarian.
  4. 4
Garlic Naan (bread) Soft flatbread brushed with garlic butter, baked in the tandoor. Use it to scoop up your curry. This is how Indian food is meant to be eaten.
  5. 5
Mango Lassi (drink) A cool, sweet yogurt-based drink with mango. It's also a great antidote if something turns out spicier than expected — the yogurt neutralizes heat.

Understanding the Menu

Curries

A curry is simply a sauce-based dish. It can be creamy (like butter chicken or palak paneer), tomato-based, or broth-based. Don't let the word "curry" intimidate you — it just means the protein or vegetables are cooked in a flavoured sauce. Most curries are mild unless specifically marked as hot.

Tandoor Dishes

A tandoor is a traditional clay oven that reaches extreme temperatures. Tandoori dishes (chicken, paneer, fish) are grilled directly in the oven, which gives them a smoky, charred flavour. They tend to be marinated in yogurt and spices but are not necessarily spicy. Tandoori chicken is a great option for someone who likes grilled food.

Breads

Naan is the most familiar — soft, slightly chewy flatbread from the tandoor. Roti is thinner and whole wheat. Kulcha is stuffed flatbread (our specialty). All of them are used to scoop and eat curries. You can also order plain rice or biryani as your base instead.

Vegetarian Options

Indian food has an enormous range of vegetarian dishes — far more than most cuisines. Palak paneer (spinach with cheese), dal makhani (lentils), chana masala (chickpeas), and paneer tikka are all completely meat-free and absolutely delicious. Don't think of vegetarian as a limitation here.

What Makes Desi Tadka Different for Beginners

We've introduced a lot of Stittsville and Kanata residents to Indian food for the first time. Here's what we do differently: we explain the menu. If you're not sure what to order, just ask our staff. We'll ask what you already like — do you like creamy sauces? Grilled food? Spicy or mild? — and we'll point you in the right direction.

We also never rush spice on dishes. Our recipes are built for flavour, not heat. The warmth in our food comes from aromatic spices — cumin, cardamom, coriander — not raw chili. That's a very different experience from places that use heat as a shortcut.

Your First Visit: What to Expect

Walk in, take a seat or order at the counter for takeout. If you're new, say so — we genuinely love introducing people to Indian food and will help you build a great order. The food comes out fresh and hot. There's no dress code, no fuss. Just good food made the right way.

Most first-timers leave with a favourite dish they didn't know existed an hour earlier. That's the thing about Indian food — once you find the dishes that click for you, you'll wonder how you went without them.
